  Biography of William Sakespeare

1564-1616
He was born and brought up in Stratford-on-Avon, where his father was a glover. Very little is known about his life, but he is thought to have started out as a schoolmaster.
The first we know of his connections with the stage is in 1594, when he joined London as leading theatre company and worked at the Globe theatre, beside the Thames.

He wrote nearly forty plays : comedies, tragedies, and historical plays, and poems, including 154 sonnets. He was often involved in the day-to-day productions of his work, rewriting or removing unsatisfactory or unsuitable scenes, and, it is thought, acting in them himself.
He, better than anyone, knew what "worked" on stage.
